After Charter Spectrum Internet quietly and abruptly blocked access to stopice.net without telling their internet customers, we reached out requesting they remove the erroneous block, but instead they responded with the following:

“We found this website to contain potentially harmful content”

Charter Spectrum did not Specify what the “potentially harmful content” was, and there was no option to respond to their message.

We originally noticed the block after receiving numerous messages from users saying they could not access stopice.net from their residential and business wi-fi connections. After investigating the matter further we quickly realized all of these users were using Charter Spectrum Internet, who had recently added the block to their "Security Shield" feature. 

The “Security Shield” feature enables Charter Spectrum block internet customer's routers from accessing sites they believe contain “harmful” content such as malware or phishing scams.

Stopice.net clearly does not fall into either of these categories, yet Spectrum knowingly prevented access to the site under the false pretext of “harmful content” — without ever notifying their customers.

After Charter failed to remove the block, we decided to publish the matter publicly on our @stopicenet Instagram account.

Within minutes, Charter Spectrum responded to our post saying they would look into the matter further. 

After public pressure, we confirmed that Charter Spectrum had removed the block on stopice.net

The block comes shortly after large-scale attacks failed to take down the stopice.net server and failed disrupt alerts over the past month.

Stopice.net exists in the interest of free speech, legal transparency, user anonymity, and user-privacy.  Each alert is sent anonymously. Stopice.net does not store or collect personal information such as names, addresses, browser history or GPS data. A user account is not required to view alert feeds, live maps or plate tracker functions. 

When large digital platforms and service providers attempt to undermine user-privacy and anonymity, it is crucial that we speak up and demonstrate our power in numbers.
